 Tour Itinerary:

Day 1 : You meet your cruise host at the Spokane airport in Washington State.  Lunch is provided as we drive through the scenic farmlands of Washington for the Snake River.  We meet our vessel and freshen up before an afternoon Jet Boat ride into Hells Canyon.  Butch and his team at Riverquest jet boat tours thrill you as you cruise upriver into history!  Learn about the heroic deeds and maritime mayhem of years gone by as steam ships came and went in the region.  You’ll enjoy a stop on the river’s edge for snacks and refreshments as well.  It’s a great day!  You’re aboard the Island Spirit for a dinner cruise downriver to our evening anchorage.  We transit our first lock enroute!

Day 2 : Enjoy river cruising and kayaking today.  We transit some of the largest locks in North America on this trip dropping an average of 80 feet or more per lock.  We are seeing dramatic changes in scenery.  Learn about the Ice Age floods and keep an eye out for remnants of Columnar Lava flows in the hill sides.  Your cruise host will entertain and educate you about the history and geology of the area.  We stop at the mouth of the Palouse River to marvel at this carved canyon and astonishing rock formations.

Day 3 : Today we stop at Sacajawea Park and enjoy a discussion on the trail of Lewis and Clark.  Later today we visit Richland, WA.  Home of the nuclear age of WWII.  You’ll visit a local museum and learn about the tremendous efforts that occurred in this area in total secrecy.  A town of 50,000 and the first of our nation’s nuclear reactors was built in this region.  It provided the weapons grade plutonium for the Nagasaki bomb in America’s WWII war effort.  All of this done in secrecy!  In just two years!

Day 4 : Today we break from our education on history and get an education on the local climate of the area.  It produces two powerful products.  Energy from the wind, and grapes from the fertile soil and mild climate.  We’ll do a little cruising among the region of wineries and towering wind generators.  Visit a wind turbine and see how they turn on the “juice” or electric power, then, after some morning cruising, visit a local winery and enjoy a tasting.  Learn about the thriving Washington wine industry and its product.  We port tonight in a local riverfront community.  Enjoy an evening stroll.

Day 5 : We are back on the river, set to enjoy the scenery of the spectacular Columbia River Gorge.  The river bank builds to thousands of feet around us.  Later this afternoon,  enjoy a guided tour of the Bonneville Lock and Dam as well as Multnomah Falls.  Tonight we port at Hood River, Oregon.  Enjoy evening entertainment as we bring about some local musicians.

Day 6 : This morning we cruise to Washougal, Washington.  Enjoy this scenic part of the Columbia River.  We are in the dramatic Columbia River Gorge.  This afternoon, join your motor coach for a tour to majestic Mt. St. Helens and enjoy time at the visitor center.  Go back in time to this volcanic event.  Afterwards, onboard for some cruising and dinner.

Day 7 : Enjoy a cruising day as your Captain brings you to the mighty Pacific Ocean at Astoria, OR.  Spend time at the wonderful Columbia River Maritime Museum and learn about the power of the ocean just outside our door.  It’s a peaceful evening for a stroll in this riverfront community.

Day 8 : This morning, visit the Columbia River Interpretive center – Enjoy the spectacular view above the notorious Columbia River Bar – learn about the maritime history.  View the mighty Pacific Ocean.  Afterwards, take an entertaining trolley ride through town, then visit to the Astor Column which overlooks the entire Astoria area and the mouth of the Pacific.

Day 9 : After breakfast onboard, we depart for the Portland airport and flights home.  It’s been a great trip  upon two great rivers of the west.  The Snake and the mighty Columbia.
